It all began with a simple idea – to simplify the process of ordering food. Deepinder Goyal, fresh out of IIT Delhi and working at Bain & Company, recognized the challenges employees faced in ordering takeout. Armed with a vision to streamline the process, he scanned restaurant menus and uploaded them to the company’s intranet. Little did he know, this was the inception of what would later become Zomato.

In 2008, Zomato, then known as FoodieBay, took its first steps into the world. The concept, already validated within Bain, was now ready to conquer Delhi. What started as a humble endeavor soon transformed into a household name, synonymous with food discovery and delivery across India.

Fast forward to today, and Zomato has evolved into much more than a mere platform for menu scanning. It’s a publicly listed company, India’s first unicorn to go public, boasting a valuation of over $13.3 billion. With investments in multiple startups and subsidiaries like Blinkit, Zomato has cemented its position as a market leader, capturing 45% of India’s food delivery market.

However, Zomato’s journey hasn’t been without its share of ups and downs. Following a successful IPO in July 2021, the company experienced fluctuations in its stock prices. Yet, amidst the volatility, founder Deepinder Goyal remains unfazed. For him, Zomato isn’t just about profits; it’s about revolutionizing the way people think about food.

But how did Zomato achieve such monumental success? At its core lies a culture of innovation, ownership, and relentless pursuit of excellence. With over 5,000 dedicated employees, Zomato operates more like a close-knit community than a corporate entity. The company’s ethos revolves around continuous learning, collaboration, and a firm belief in individual expertise.

Zomato’s success isn’t solely attributed to its business acumen but also to its unique approach to company culture. Unlike traditional organizations, Zomato prioritizes greatness over incentives, fostering a work environment where every individual strives for excellence, not just rewards.

In a country where food is more than just sustenance, Zomato has left an indelible mark on India’s culinary landscape. By changing consumer habits and challenging industry norms, Zomato has truly ‘Zomatoed’ its way into the hearts and minds of millions, reshaping the future of food culture in India.
